Location
The Rogoznica peninsula is located in the south-east part of the Šibensko-kninska county (34 km south of Šibenik and exactly as much north from the Split airport). What is today a peninsula once used to be a little piece of mainland called Kopača and a small isle Kopara, which were merged by an artificial dam into a whole.
The wonderfully indented bay of Rogoznica is completely protected by the Ražanj peninsula and Smokvica isle from the east, south and south-west, while it’s western coast is exposed to the open sea.
Safe anchorage reputation gave Rogoznica special meaning which was well known to the oldest seamen and travellers.
The Rogoznica peninsula has special climatic features which distinguish it significantly from the rest of the Šibenik coastline of which it is a part. It is a sort of a borderline between a tamer, warmer climate of the south and a harsher, somewhat rough climate on the north and north-west. Due to relatively small cloudiness, the rainfall is not too big either and the insulation is considerable which is all very positive for tourism affairs.
On the Gradina peninsula a lake called Zmajevo oko with salty water, suddenly appeared.
This lake is considered a natural bioreactor within which bio-chemical processes go on. It is said that the sea around Rogoznica is the clearest in the Adriatic. The town’s centre is located on the island. For most part old stone houses have been preserved, which along with the palm-trees on the waterfront, gives Rogoznica that authentic Mediterranean atmosphere. Most of the island is covered in pine wood which has a trim-track alongside the coast which is ideal for jogging and walking. The new part of the town is developing on the mainland.
