Barratt Homes has decided to scrap stamp duty in south Wales irrespective of the chancellor's will-he wont-he decision to suspend the unpopular tax.
Following media speculation that Alistair Darling was about to declare a stamp duty holiday, the Treasury has dismissed the reports as "simply wrong".
But Barratt has confirmed that it will scrap the tax with immediate effect, which means people buying new homes from Barratt in south Wales will not be liable for any stamp duty.
Instead, the housebuilder will pay it on their behalf.
Sandra Dixon, sales director for Barratt, said: "We don't want our homebuyers to worry about whether they should buy now or wait to see if the chancellor makes a change to the rules."
Homes currently available under Barratt's stamp duty scheme include Ty Glas Square, Llandaff Grove, ipads@Cardiff Central and Vale Meadows.
Estate agents have warned that the confusion over whether or not Mr Darling will suspend tax duty could deter homebuyers from purchasing property.
