Location is the first priority for many first-time buyers who are also busy, young professionals, one housebuilder has said.
A case study released by Barratt Homes revealed that young workers in the 21st century need to be close to major transport links, such as an international airport or motorway network.
In the example of Dave and Andy, Barratt's Woodfield Lodge development in Crawley town centre was in easy reach of both Gatwick Airport and the M23.
"We were worried at first that the apartment might be too small, but when we saw the show home we were very impressed with the amount of space," said Dave.
"Our parents are very impressed that we’ve managed to get on the property ladder in the south of England."
Woodfield Lodge contains one and two-bedroom apartments about a mile from Crawley town centre, with prices starting at £194,995.
Special incentives are also available for first-time buyers, according to Barratt.
